Monday's Church Chat

Church is on my mind this afternoon, so lets have a Church Chat Monday. The story? Several months ago, I decided that the girls and I would join Wynne Baptist. There was one catch. A New Members Class, I had never heard of this. I was all..." I have to take a class to join a SOUTHERN BAPTIST church?" I was the "Well I Never" church person. (I would use the term church lady, but fortheloveofpeanutbutter, that makes me sound old.) I frankly thought that it was silly, a waste of time, and didn't understand why, if I was moving my membership from one SBC to another SBC, did I have to have a class to tell me how to be a Baptist. I am the daughter of a very devoted Southern Baptist Woman, after all, and what could I possibly need to learn that I haven't heard over the last 30-something years. (we've been there, done that here.)

First, just because someone grows up in that religion, does not mean that they KNOW IT ALL. I grew up in Southern Baptist Churches, breathed, ate and slept, SBC. I can't remember the exact date and time I was saved, like some can, which used to worry me. I do remember that it happened at Youth Camp and the Baptism was at Union Avenue.

This class that I was stubbornly not wanting to take brought old and new things to light for me. For instance, I have never had anyone describe the practice of Baptism like Bro. Matt. I've always heard, you follow up your profession of faith by being Baptised to show publicly that you are a believer. That's it. His analogy...paraphrasing "Your sins are being washed and you come up clean in the blood of Jesus Christ who has wrapped his arms around you and saved you from sin." He demonstrated as he said this and it just struck me that this is what I'm getting out of this class...something I've heard billions of times made new...there were more things I learned, parenting, which prompted that confusing post I referenced earlier.

Are you wondering what made me take the class I that I thought was "not for me"? Two preachers, whom I have been friends with for many years told plain and simple that I was just being plain stubborn, get over it, go to the class, and join that church. The girls and I have finished the class and have only one more thing to do. Our testimonies.

Hard to believe that I will be joining the church that my SBC mom said was stuck up. And how's this for a good chuckle...I believed her.

Oh, learned the word plethora...

hahaha! too funny! i have a friend that reminds me of you. she too can be stubborn sometimes. recently she got irritated at someone from our church. I told her to "grow up" and that she needed a "spiritual spaking". I think we can all use spiritual spankings every now and again!

Maybe they'll put you on the fast learning track?

I enjoyed reading about your experience at WBC. I have been a Baptist for a number of years and a member of WBC for almost 40 years. I have seen a lot of changes in my church over the years.
