"Santa" - John Logan Clark and Kaye Brawner in December 1973
Most of you all know that Papaw Clark has been sick for a few weeks now. He went to the hospital Sunday, December 23 because of his high fever and pneumonia. All of his children were there at one point, Susan NEVER left his side. Lisa, Randall and I had a few moments with him alone and I believe he knew we were there and he was calm for a little while. Anyone who ever met John Logan knows that there was always a great big smile and a FIRM handshake. He never met a stranger and until the later years always remembered you.
The services were at Kernodle's, and it was really nice. Bro. Ray Dean did an excellent job.
Typing this it is very hard not to cry, as a matter of fact, I probably will cry. I won't know what to do with myself in the afternoons now, there is no one at the nursing home waiting for me, there will be no more funny stories about the "goings on" in his garden, no one to sing Captain Kerri, Kimo Neery (I so do not know how to spell any of that...but those who knew him, knows that song). The most important thing that I will miss will be this...."Well, theres that ol' Katie Bug and my girls, come give papaw a hug." (He never treated Mary Margaret and Taylor any different) It was hard losing Mamaw Brawner...I grew up not getting to see her or, I was closer to her the last six or seven years she was alive...Losing Papaw Clark seems to be much harder because Papaw Clark was always there, so many more memories...one pant leg stuck in the boot and dirt all over him, and a bucket full of fresh vegetables...he never forgot to bring me something from his garden. I miss our "Fried Green Tomatoe" lunches in the summer, he and Tommye would call when a fresh batch was ready, I miss seeing him fly into the funeral home parking lot (most of us wondering if he would stop before he got out), I could go on for days.
We all remember the singing..."I'll Fly Away" and "Revive Us Again"...at the top of his lungs. Tim and I went to Beck Spur Baptist with him and Tommye a few times, after he had stopped leading the singing...but he was still just as loud and happy as ever!
Everyone who knew him...at one point in your life... you were backed into a corner with John Logan...I learned this weekend that he even burned someone's nose with his cigar...he got so close. I heard many funny stories that I had never heard before and they were all bitter sweet.
I introduced him once to my bosses at Kernodle's as My Grandfather John Logan Clark, he corrected really quickly...I'm not her grandfather, I AM HER PAPAW! She better remember that.
Papaw....I will never forget....Ol' Katie Bug
